Harvest Home

Who are we?

Harvest Home is an acoustic and electric folk band. We were formed in 2006 by a group of like-minded ‘folkies’ to provide an evening of folk music for Hosanna church. At that time we were all members of the church worship band and discovered we had a shared love of folk music and all things musical. Following the success of this first folk evening we decided to continue as a band and look for opportunities to provide music for either folk or worship based events - or even a mix of the two.

Over the past 8 years we have been able to provide entertainment at a number of venues, supporting fundraisers, folk evenings, St Patrick's day celebrations, harvest suppers, a wedding reception and singing at local nursing homes. As a band we are happy to do full acoustic or electro-acoustic sets and major on vocal harmonies. Harvest Home cover a wide range of folk styles from the vocal harmony of the Carnival Band through the poignant ballads of Peter Bond to the faster louder Irish folk tradition.

Harvest Home is made up of Barbara (Vocals), David (Fiddle, Vocals), John (Guitar, Vocals), Simon (Guitar, Mandolins, Ukelele, Vocals) and Robin (Bass).

John & Barbara, whose backgrounds are steeped in Church choral music, started singing folk in the early 1980’s as part of a 4 piece group Canticle who performed regularly during that time at the Willows. Following a ‘children enforced’ 18 year break, during which time they had moved away from the choral tradition to get heavily involved in the less traditional worship style of music, they welcomed the opportunity to combine this with getting back into the folk world. During this time Barbara sang regularly as part of Cantamus, a local 8 piece madrigal group. John plays guitar and provides tenor harmonies and some lead vocal whilst Barbara provides the female lead vocal and most of the introductions.

David was also part of Cantamus with Barbara, and now sings regularly with the Steyning based Kaleidoscope Singers. Finding himself in a folk band, David rediscovered his violin in the bottom of a wardrobe, where it had lain idle for 25 years. He once appeared in a student production of 'Fiddler on the Roof', but not in the title role.

Simon has been playing folk and singing for many years, having been a regular at the sing-around which was organised by members of the local Irish folk band Flash Company. Simon has also done solo spots at the annual St Patrick’s night function in Worthing Pavilion. As well as providing male lead vocals on some songs, Simon is a talented multi-instrumentalist playing guitar, mandolin, octave mandolin and ukelele - he even, at one point, attempted to learn the piano accordion - to the band's great relief, he gave up!
